DIE THIS WAY  -  6/3/2009  -  STEPHANIE HOUGH

This image is an attempt at subverting virtual culture, this image calls to question our perception of death in a time when we not only are confronted with it every day in the news we as a species have become immune to the idea of death, this is in part most likely a survival mechanism or should i say a type of filtration system we have developed in order to cope with that type of traumatic information. but the glorification of death within virtual realities is almost as terrifiying maybe computer games are also ariseing out of our desire to create coping mehanisims to logically justify atrocity’s.

anyway this nameless, clothing-less, virtual female charachter is strangely crawling along  within an inane forest and she has red markings on her body. The Virtual aesthetic creates a false sense of familiarity  upon closer inspection it begins to sit uncomfortabley, This image is a disturbance from your run of the mill computer game or avatar. the fact she is half naked scratched and bruised begins to suggest something different, maybe you begin to play a senario in your head or maybe you start asking questions like why is she lying there? is this the result of an attack? something more sinister is happening here than the more playfull and less challenging aspect of computer gaming where you dont dwell on killing someone you must move on without a second thought.

THIS VIDEO PIECE HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR AN EXHIBITION IN LONDON CALLED ‘VISIONS AT THE NUNNERY

Visions in the Nunnery is an annual event that showcases some of the most exciting British and International artists who are pushing the elements of film, video and moving image practice. It is also an opportunity for artists and audiences to engage with contemporary moving image work both visually and through critical debate.

This event takes a very fresh and exciting slice of contemporary moving image work and creates a critical platform where artists and audiences can come together for the enjoyment of contemporary moving image.

Visions in the Nunnery is the tenth annual open submission event for artists working with the moving image in a contemporary context.
The variety of conceptual approaches and aesthetic choices shows a medium alive with enthusiasm and questions.

A video i made which uses a scene from Donald Cammells 1977 sci-fi thriller ‘Demon Seed’ this scene originally was the first sign of trouble with the computer named Proteus IV who confronted his creator Dr Harris. Proteus IV eventually rapes Mrs Harris in an attempt to create a hybrid human computer.

The voice over was inspired by the youtube genre which there are many of this sort, people taking footage from popular culture and reverting it into their own version, or their own commentary which spring many dichotomies and interesting analogy’s.

this image shows 3 stills taken from 3 seperate videos which documented the reactions from three people watching the iconic video of the user generated era created by Chris Crocker titled Leave Britney Alone when adding this post the vid had 18,389,208 views which can be found on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc

but if you have not seen it please record your reaction and send it to me! or if you live in Ireland i will come and record you..
